Bike Selling Tips

  • Decide whether you want to use the Internet as just a billboard or if you want to use an auction site such as eBay.
  • Determine the bike's sale price.
  • Write a description of the bike. The description should read like a regular classified ad. Be sure to include your location, a telephone number and an e-mail address.
  • Find a local billboard or auction site (see Related Sites).
  • Register and pay a fee as necessary.
  • Post your ad.
  • Post any photographs.
  • Respond to inquiries as normal. Show the bike, answer questions, and negotiate a price in person and away from the computer, if possible.

    Tips:
Be specific in your ad, using keywords that search engines can find.
If dealing with people outside your area, make clear that it is the buyer's responsibility to come get the bike or arrange for its delivery.

    Warnings:
Using an auction site as a billboard is often effective, but has potential pitfalls. Among them is the possibility that you will get a negative rating on the auction site. Also, auction sites are, in part, operating on the good faith of those involved. Breaking that trust will, ultimately, undermine your ability to sell or even advertise your bike there.
